Hoboken Public Library's early days were spent in the Second National Bank building on the corner of Hudson Place, near the train station. The library swiftly began to outgrow this location, however, and it was concluded that a new, purpose-built library building would be needed. In stepped Martha Bayard Stevens, who donated the land on which the new building would be constructed, and by 1897 the current building was open for business at the corner of 5th Street and Park Avenue, across from Church Square Park.<\/p>\n
